Transition

Final Thought for Reincarnation

No one likes to think you could be “here today and gone tomorrow”, but a brief look at the news tells you it is so. But your true Self (sanskrit Ātman) is never gone, it just moves on.

The best way to think about reincarnation is this: one dream ends and another dream begins, and the final thought of the first dream becomes the seed for the following dream. As Bhagavad Gita verse 8:6 puts it, “Whatever object one remembers at the time of death, when one gives up the body … that very same object one attains.”

What you want from reincarnation is a transition to a better lifetime, one that is more auspicious, comfortable, and conducive to rapid spiritual progress. (This is discussed in Bhagavad Gita verses 6:40-45.) This is the most common form of Salvation that everyone can aspire to.

The best way to set your final thought is to think frequently of God, so that the thought of God is present in one’s mind at the time of transition to the next lifetime.
